Inclusion Support the Neurodivergent Way

Welcome to The Atypical Educator, where disability, diversity and difference are embraced and celebrated every day.

The Atypical Educator uses lived experience with disability to educate and support educators, families and the community on neurodiversity and inclusion. This is what differentiates us from many other inclusion support consultancies.

We provide professional development workshops, mentoring, parent/family education, behaviour troubleshooting and guidence, as well as inclusion and acccessability consultancy.

We have an online shop which stocks resources to support the adults in their endeavour to understand neurodiversity and to create inclusive environments. Also in stock are resources to support children to further develop their understanding of disability and inclusion and to ensure that children with disabilities see themslelves represented.

Here are The Atypical Educator, we use strengths based, neuroaffirming methods which support young people in developing confident and authentic identities, as well as a strong sense of self-worth.

We empower educators and parents to feel confident in understanding neurodivergent minds and how to support their needs of children with neuroaffirming guidence and accommodations.

about the atypical educator

Born with 22q11 Duplication Syndrome, Rhi Sugars is an Autistic – ADHDer who is passionate about inclusion and celebrating and sharing her Neurodivergent world.

With a professional background in early childhood education, Rhi has spent the past 17 years watching her fellow colleagues seek out inclusion support but often being left without the support they’re searching for.

As a mother of two, Rhi has experienced the frustration and concern of having to leave her children in the care of, or be taught by educators lacking in inclusion and Neurodiversity knowledge.

It was for these reasons, combined with her own experiences of growing up Neurodivergent in a Neurotypical world, Rhi created The Atypical Educator.

Here at The Atypical Educator we:

  • Believe in open and honest conversations about Neurodiversity, disability and inclusion.
  • Believe in the importance of disabled voices being centred.
  • Aim to create safe spaces where questions can be asked and answered honestly, myths or beliefs can be challenged and understanding and empowerment is found.
  • Understand the importance and value of lived experience and roll it plays in education.
  • We promote and utilise strengths-based, neuro-affirming methods for navigating challenging behaviour.Whether you’re an educator needing to upskill your inclusion practice or in search of inclusive resources, a parent trying to understand your child’s diagnosis or a business owner hoping to make their business more inclusive and accessible to the community, The Atypical Educator is here to support you.
